The Flaming Lips, Deap Vally Release ‘Deap Lips’ Collaboration Album [Stream]

The Flaming Lips and Deap Vally are celebrating the arrival of their collaborative studio album this weekend, as the two rock bands released Deap Lips via Deap Lips/Cooking Vinyl this past Friday (3/13).

Initially confirmed by both bands last spring, Deap Lips features previously-released singles “Hope Hell High” and “Home Through Hell”, along with eight other infectious rock recordings which highlight the collaborative efforts from both bands.

Deap Vally, comprised of guitarist Lindsey Troy and drummer Julie Edwards, first began to share photos and videos from the studio alongside The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd as far back as spring 2018. The two parties met at a Deap Vally show in Raleigh, NC in 2016, and the relationship snowballed from there. The album was officially confirmed this past December.

Wayne Coyne mentioned in a statement about their collaboration,

“I can’t remember exactly when I became aware of Deap Vally… but let’s say it was sometime just before I saw them play. I was in Raleigh visiting with the creator of the World’s Largest Gummy Bear, and so getting to experience Deap Vally was just one more cool thing of many cool things that were happening to me … I met Lindsey that night and we both were glad we met. Deap Vally got my phone number and about a year later hit me up, out of the blue ..and invited themselves to come to Oklahoma City and jam with us and maybe come up with a couple songs for their “collaboration” album that they were working on. They showed up with no songs so Steven [Drozd] and I quickly threw together a song and set about playing and tracking and singing and rewriting lyrics and before we knew it we, surprisingly, had a great, great track. Which would become the opening track off the record “Home Thru Hell.” The session in Oklahoma City was fun and spontaneous and a very lucky kind of magic happened…we stumbled upon some really great, catchy, cool songs.”

Deap Vally has not put out a studio album since 2016’s Femejism, As for The Flaming Lips, the veteran psych-rock band released a pair of studios projects in 2019 with King’s Mouth: Music And Songs and The Soft Bulletin, as the latter highlighted their 2016 Red Rocks Amphitheater performance alongside the Colorado Symphony.

The Flaming Lips are scheduled to kick off a brief run of spring tour dates beginning next month on April 14th in Spokane, WA. As of Sunday, the band’s upcoming spring shows are still on as scheduled, pending the progress the state of Washington continues to enforce public health advisories surrounding the growing threat of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in the state.
