Nearly 18 months since his last full-length album, Ride WavesGRiZ has surprised fans with a brand new release, Chasing The Golden Hour Pt. 3. This third installment in the Chasing The Golden Hour mixtape series follows part two in 2017 and part one in 2015.

Pt. 3 marks a deviation from the heavier, dubstep-style sounds of the past year or so found in his releases, harkening back to the more chill and downtempo grooves found in earlier entries of the CTGH series.

Serving as the perfect musical meal to end the summer, CTGH Pt. 3 incorporates a variety of sounds and styles, putting GRiZ’s top-tier production and musical knowledge on full display. With the poignant spoken word found on the album opener, “Know Time Like The Present”, the more upbeat post-disco grooves on “Nights in Shibuya”, or the California soul and r&b flavors on “Won’t Be Gone Long”, the mixtape covers many musical bases and seemingly has something on it for everyone.

“I wanted to recreate the carefree good vibes you feel when it’s just about sunset on the perfect summer evening and everything is the most beautiful shimmering tint of gold,” said GRiZ in a press release. “Chasing The Golden Hour is that magical moment, it is the cool breeze against your back, it is sweet summer swagger in music form.”

The mixtape’s lead single, “Sweet”, serves as the apex of that magical moment, with its contemporary funk groove and signature saxophone phrases, leading to the meditative album closers, “Floating” and “Where Will I Go”.

Said GRiZ of the single, “I was looking for samples and was also really inspired by the 6/8 time swing stuff that Kevin Parker [Tame Impala] has been creating. This song kinda came to me at that time when I had it in my mind to do that. I’ve been playing tons of saxophone recently and this one was too much fun to rip over.”
