Jack White has issued a new preview of Entering Heaven Alive in the form of a video for “If I Die Tomorrow”. Directed by Brantley Gutierrez, the clip illuminates the song’s theme of death and dying with haunting, monochromatic imagery of frontier life that culminates with Jack White singing the song’s final lyrics from his earthen grave.
The song is slow and contemplative, a far cry from White’s garage rock origins, with lyrics that are uncharacteristically straightforward for the eccentric bluesman. “If I die tomorrow,” the song begins, “could you find it in your heart to sing? / If my mother cries in sorrow / will you help her with the many things / that she needs from time to time and day to day?” The rest of the lyrics read like a letter focused mostly on the narrator’s mother and others who cared for him in life. “I begged and borrowed everybody’s love and they gave for free / and I wish that I could give it back to them / so if I die tomorrow / will you give them all the love the lent to me?” White sings as he lies in a shallow grave.
Along with the new single and video, Jack White has announced limited edition Entering Heaven Alive vinyl variants, which are currently available for pre-order here. The variants include a ‘Detroit Denim’ independent record store exclusive version, ‘Tranquil Turquoise’ in the Third Man Records web store, ‘Heavenly Eclipse’ via Vinyl Me, Please, and a Barnes & Noble edition that will come with an exclusive slip mat. Standard black vinyl, CD, limited edition Bandcamp exclusive white cassette, and digital download are also available.
Entering Heaven Alive is due to arrive on July 22nd via Third Man Records. It is Jack White’s second new album of 2022, following Fear of the Dawn, which made a landmark entrance on April 8th with nine #1 chart debuts in its first week including Billboard‘s “Top album Sales,” “Top Current Album Sales,” “Top Alternative Albums,” “Top Rock Albums,” “Recod Label Independent Current Albums,” “Digital Albums,” “Current Digital Albums,” “Internet Albums,” and “Vinyl Albums.” The record also debuted at #4 on the overall Billboard 200.
Jack White is currently wrapping up the first North American leg of his extensive Supply Chain Issues Tour. White’s first headlining trek in four years will resume later this month with a run of shows in Europe. White will return home for a second series of North American headline shows beginning at Minneapolis, MN’s Armory on August 13th. He will also perform at a number of upcoming festivals including Louisville, KY’s Bourbon & Beyond (September 15th), Atlanta, GA’s Music Midtown (September 17th-18th), Dana Point, CA’s Ohana Festival (October 1st), Primavera Sound Buenos Aires in Argentina (October 14th), and Primavera Sound Santiago in Chile (October 16th).
