Jason Isbell joined Amanda Shires and Kelly Garcia Plemmons once again on their I So Lounging podcast this Tuesday, where he, Shires, and Seth Plemmons performed a cover of The Allman Brothers Band‘s “Melissa” during the 45-minute show.

Following a short improv jam about Isbell and Shires’ imaginary cat, Jason led the trio into “Melissa”, which Gregg Allman wrote for the Allman Brothers more than 50 years ago in 1967. Isbell took over the lead vocal and rhythm guitar responsibilities while Plemmons added lead licks and Shires provided some melodic work on the fiddle. The song contained a short, acoustic jam session that Isbell used to show off some lead guitar licks of his own.

The three followed that up with banter and a giveaway before launching into the Amanda Shires original, “I Know What It’s Like”, which saw Isbell break out the slide for his guitar leads. After a take on Wet Willie‘s “Keep On Smiling”, the trio finished off the musical portion of the stream with “Zeyk’s Blues”, an improv number and ode to Shires and Isbell’s dog of the same name. This rendition of “Zeyk’s Blues” was completely different from last week’s, offering new lyrics and even a different key.
