Anderson .Paak has released “Don’t Slack”, a collaboration with Justin Timberlake from the Trolls World Tour soundtrack.
Trolls World Tour is a follow up to 2016’s Trolls, starring Timberlake as Branch, an over-cautious survivalist, and Anna Kendrick as Queen Poppy, the optimistic Queen of the Trolls. The film also stars Paak as Prince D, a Funk Troll, and George Clinton as his father, King Quincy, the King of the Funk Trolls, appropriately.
“Don’t Slack” arrives as a short, three-minute song; however, in those three minutes Paak’s royal, funk-infused bloodline presents itself clearly. Both Paak and Timberlake share vocal responsibilities over an infectiously groovy opening bassline. The track beams with positivity—due to its creation for a children’s movie, no doubt—as Timberlake adds his poppy flair and vocal harmonies throughout. Drum buildups during the choruses flow in unison with horns towards a peak that drops back into the verse where the two singers continue to trade harmonies, culminating in a soaring choral arrangement at the end.

Timberlake executive produced the soundtrack for DreamWorks Animation‘s latest project and it is loaded with special guests and collaborations including, HAIM, Mary J. Blige, SZA, and more. Clearly Timberlake had a lot of fun on this project, and more specifically with Paak, as he told Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe that future collaborations are a possibility: “I hope he doesn’t mind that I’m gonna say this right now, but we talked about a possible joint project.” Timberlake continued, “We talked about it, but yeah, he’s a busy man, too. I was like, ‘You need to enjoy your moment, bro, ’cause it is…’ He played me new stuff the other day—that dude is so gifted.”
Trolls World Tour hits theaters on April 10th and there are sure to be more surprise collaborations throughout. Visit Justin Timberlake‘s and Anderson .Paak‘s websites for more information regarding their tour plans and future projects.
