Khruangbin returned to New York City on Thursday to take part in the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival. The concert, which featured support from Vieux Farka Touré, served as the third-to-last show of the months-long season of programming at the Prospect Park Bandshell.
Thursday’s concert marked the first performance in The Big Apple for the trio comprised of Mark Speer (guitar), Laura Lee (bass, vocals), and Donald “DJ” Johnson since Khruangbin headlined two nights at Radio City Music Hall back in April. Since then, the trio has dotted the globe on its Space Walk Tour, which included sets at Primavera Sound, Glastonbury, Shaky Knees, and more, in addition to headlining dates throughout North America, U.K., and Europe.
Khruangbin’s arrival in NYC also came shortly after the band announced Ali, a collaborative album with Vieux Farka Touré. The Malian singer and guitarist served as the opening act for the Brooklyn show and even joined the band for an encore performance of “Mahine Me”, a cover is set to appear on the album. Ali will serve as a tribute to desert blues guitar innovator and Vieux’s father, the late Ali Farka Touré, who has been called the “African John Lee Hooker”.
