On Thursday night, neo-soul and gospel torch-bearer Leon Bridges made his way to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to show off a track from his new album, Good Thing, released this past May via Columbia Records. While he was there, Bridges also recorded the latest installment of The Tonight Show‘s “Cover Room” series, inflecting Neil Young classic “Helpless” with his trademark silky croon backstage at the show’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza studio. “Cover Room” was recently nominated for a 2018 Emmy Award in the “Outstanding Short Form Variety Series” category and, in April, received a Webby Award for the webisode featuring Kesha’s performance of The Eagles‘ “The House of the Rising Sun.”

This is not the first time we’ve heard Leon Bridges help transform a classic Neil Young cut. In September of last year, Bridges teamed with Jon Batiste and Gary Clark Jr. for an exclusive Spotify session that saw the three contemporary greats reimagine protest hymn “Ohio”. You can listen to Bridges, Batiste, and Clark’s rendition of “Ohio” here. For more videos from The Tonight Show‘s “Cover Room” series, head to the show’s YouTube page here.
Leon Bridges recently announced an extensive tour with supporting acts including Jon Batiste and Stay Human, Masego, and Khruangbin. Up next for Bridges is a performance at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, tonight on August 9th. See below for a full list of dates.
