“It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas” because Mac DeMarco has delivered yet another annual holiday cover. The take on Meredith Wilson‘s holiday classic arrives as the Canadian indie singer-songwriter’s only new release of the year.

The holidays have always been a special time for DeMarco, with the guitarist releasing covers of Christmas classics dating back to his days in Makeout Videotape at the turn of the 2010s. Recent years have delivered such staples as “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” in 2021 and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” the year prior. The accompanying music video for “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas” builds on that tradition by once again employing inflatable anthropomorphic ornaments and introducing dirt bikes this year.

The holiday cover marks Mac’s first new release since September 2021 when his cover of “Enter Sandman” was included as part of The Metallica Blacklist compilation. Earlier this year, he announced a slate of worldwide tour dates only to cancel them a month later so he could continue working on an upcoming project, five easy hot dogs. Recently, unconfirmed rumors of DeMarco’s retirement began to swell on social media, leading to a massive spike in streams for his 2019 Here Comes the Cowboy track “Heart to Heart”, per Billboard. Following the release of the holiday cover, a rep for DeMarco denied rumors of his retirement to Stereogum, with Mac himself replying with a picture of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
