Newly-minted Spafford keyboardist Cory Schechtman received a hero’s welcome on Wednesday evening when the band performed a sold-out show at Soundcheck Studios. The new Pembroke, MA hotspot lies less than 50 miles from where the New Motiff co-founder grew up on Cape Cod.

Schechtman first got the call from Spafford back in September when longtime keyboardist Andrew “Red” Johnson was called home to Arizona to tend to family medical issues. Shortly after Schechtman filled in at those four fall shows, Red announced that after 11 years with the band he was leaving Spafford. After playing his last show with Spafford on New Year’s Eve—the exact 11-year anniversary of his addition to the band—Red vacated his seat to Schechtman, his hand-chosen replacement.

Since then, Schechtman has played alongside Brian Moss (guitar/vocals), Jordan Fairless (bass/vocals), and Nick Tkachyk (drummer) as a full-fledged member of the band. With 11 shows under his belt as the full-time keyboardist, Schechtman’s synchronicity with the rest of the band grows with each passing performance. As Spafford adjusts to the loss of Red-sung songs, the band continues to mine lesser-loved selections from its vast catalog, with Wednesday’s second set ending with just the 21st “Night After Night” since the song’s debut on December 30th, 2017, per Spaffnerds.
