The Flaming Lips are no stranger to musical tributes, having recorded renditions of famous albums like Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band and Dark Side Of The Moon. Not only are they featured on the new Grateful Dead tribute album to be released by The National, but they’ve turned their recent attentions to the late, great David Bowie, as so many in the music world have.

The group first made Bowie headlines two months ago, when they performed at eight-song tribute to the Thin White Duke at a concert in Colorado. You can watch that here. The group also came out rocking for The Music Of David Bowie tribute concert at Carnegie Hall, where frontman Wayne Coyne sang “Life On Mars?” while sitting on top of a giant Chewbacca. For real, though.

Their latest tribute is the most somber, as the band has released an official music video for the song “Space Oddity.” The video itself shows the band performing in an empty church, and features two nuns mourning the loss of someone in a graveyard. The emotional nature of the video is matched only by Coyne’s yearning vocals on the Bowie tribute track.

The band will also appear on an episode of The Tonight Show With Stephen Colbert next Tuesday, April 19th, where they will perform this song as well. The segment was previously taped when the band was in town for the Carnegie Hall benefit, and we’re looking forward to the air date!
