Trey Anastasio has released “The Greater Good”, the latest in a series of songs the Phish guitarist has debuted from quarantine.
The song marks Trey’s fifth new creation since he began releasing new music last Wednesday, joining “Lost In The Pack“, “When The Words Go Away“, “Timeless“, and “I Never Needed You Like This Before“. Stylistically, “The Greater Good” joins his previous mellow, acoustic output like “”Lost In The Pack”, and “When The Words Go Away”. Lyrically, the song is on the more optimistic end of Trey’s recent compositions. The lyrics even seem to acknowledge Trey’s own status as a sort of songbird in these trying times—and the imperative we currently face as a society to stay isolated—with the opening and ending line, “Sometimes for the greater good, I do what I know I should”. “The Greater Good” also sees a departure in the typical videography for these submissions, as the entire clip is just a shaky tracking shot of Trey’s mantle that is strangely filled with Day of the Dead iconography, including a couple of Biblical pictures depicting Jesus Christ.
Trey notes in the video’s description, “filmed ‘on location’. I ventured out of the rubber jungle into the living room/Written by Trey, [Tom Marshall], Scott [Herman]”.

In addition to all of the new songs, Phish just announced a special Dinner and a Movie webcast and cooking series. Each Tuesday, the band will air a free re-broadcast of a past show and share a dinner recipe for fans to make and eat as they watch. The first edition will take place tonight, Tuesday, March 24th, with an airing of Phish’s 8/31/12 show at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (otherwise known as the “F— Your Face” show) and a heaping helping of Trey & Sue’s “Between Me & My Mouth” vegetarian chili.
