Ty Segall paid tribute to fellow Bay Area underground rockers The Mantles with his new recording of “Don’t Lie”. The cover will appear on the prolific alt-psych artist’s upcoming solo album “Hello, Hi” out on July 22nd via Drag City.

“Don’t Lie” furthers the acoustic image of “Hello, Hi” that Segall continues to paint with each passing single. Full-album instrumental commitments are nothing new for Ty, following his 2021 synth-drenched quarantine jewel Harmonizer and 2019’s First Taste, which featured no guitar. “Don’t Lie” contains no drums, and is instead filled with layers of overdubbed acoustic guitar chords, interspersed with the occasional picking flourish. The song would make a perfect fit for the acoustic interludes that Segall has used to open concerts on his ongoing North American tour.

Digging up The Mantles’ original version of “Don’t Lie”, which appeared on the group’s self-titled 2009 album, the recording sounds much more Ty Segall than what he turned in on Tuesday. The fuzzed-out beach rock emanating from an Oakland basement clearly had a lasting effect on a rising 22-year-old Segall in Laguna Beach when the song first arrived, and now some 13 years and nearly as many albums later he has returned to honor his influences.
