Widespread Panic continues its mine of the archives with a pair of video releases including footage of “Tallboy” from the band’s 10/5/13 concert at Family Circle Stadium, along with a clip of “Action Man” from the band’s concert film Live from the Backyard. Filmed live at The Backyard in Austin, TX on 7/20/02, the performance came less than three weeks after founding guitarist Michael Houser‘s last show on July 2nd.
This is merely the latest in an ongoing content dump from the Georgia rock outfit. Over the weekend, the band also shared videos of “Tipitina” and “Driving Song” taken from the 2002 documentary The Earth Will Swallow You.
The video of “Action Man” delivers a blast from the past from Panic’s transitional period following Houser’s departure and untimely death shortly thereafter. Here fans fan find George McConnell filling in on guitar and adding his own flavor of blues licks to the songs. Rather than trying to emulate Houser’s iconic lingering lead, McConnell instead puts in his own blend of spices into the pot while still giving reverence to the band’s founding guitarist and musical guidepost. Also on hand during this cut from the second set closer is Randall Bramblet on saxophone who helps drive home this impassioned version of the Don’t Tell the Band track.
The October 2013 performance of “Tallboy” at Family Circle Stadium took place during the second of two nights at the Charleston, SC venue as part of the band’s annual run with Umphrey’s McGee. This adrenaline shot of a band staple came as the set two opener, and prior to launching into the beloved fan-favorite the band took a moment to introduce Edie Jackson who serves as an ASL interpreter or, as John Bell put it, “For people who are easy of seeing.”
