Both the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the evening-hours music marathon that surrounds it are built on tradition, and Denver Comes Alive will export long-running Jazz Fest late-night staple Worship My Organ to the Mile High City this weekend. The dueling-organ supergroup will feature Wil Blades and Robert Walter (Greyboy Allstars, Mike Gordon) on organ, Skerik (Les Claypool) on saxophone, and Adam Deitch (Lettuce, Break Science) on drums at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom on Saturday, January 18th [ticketing info].
Over the past decade-plus, Worship My Organ has become a beloved Jazz Fest after dark tradition for hosting nail-biting B3 bouts between world-class organists. Past lineups have included John Medeski, Marco Benevento, Neal Francis, Walter, and Blades, usually backed by Deitch on drums and pushed into the improvisational ether by Skerik. In the past, NOLA drummer Simon Lott, Lettuce trumpeter and provocateur Eric “Benny” Bloom, ever-present Jazz Fest after dark trumpeter Maurice “Mobetta” Brown, DJ Logic, and even Phish’s Mike Gordon have slid into the malleable lineup. Even as New Orleans venues have changed hands and names or shuttered entirely, Worship My Organ has persevered. Now, Denver will get to experience this Jazz Fest sensation as Worship My Organ joins a lineup of familiar New Orleans favorites including members of The Meters, Dumpstaphunk, Galactic, and more throughout the Denver Comes Alive lineup.
Worship My Organ will be right at home at Denver Comes Alive, an event inspired by the magic of New Orleans Jazz Fest after dark and filled with unique artist collaborations and one-off superjams. The Friday, January 17th festivities will feature Poppa Funk & The Night Tripper, a tribute to NOLA legends Art Neville and Dr. John featuring George Porter Jr., Eric Krasno, Ivan Neville, Jon Cleary, and more; Robert Walter, Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds), and Adam Deitch’s seldom-seen organ trio WRD; Ross James & Goo Bros with Bill Nershi, Jeremy Salken, Adam MacDougall, and Garrett Sayers; psychedelic soul pop trio Jimkata; and more. On Saturday, January 18th, Denver Comes Alive will close with Crescent City Classics, a celebration of NOLA’s hidden gems and lesser-known heroes, featuring Porter, Krasno, Cleary, Hall, Ivan Neville, Ian Neville, and more; the Krasno/Moore Project; Joey Porter’s Vital Organ with Garrett Sayers, Matt Jalbert, and Jeff Franca; and TAUK drummer Isaac Sinclair‘s Wayback set of nostalgic soul.
