Always with the theatrics, Dopapod returned on palindrome day (2/20/22) with a new single, “Grow”. The track is set to appear on a yet-untitled album allegedly set for release in spring.

“Grow” is one of Dopapod’s older compositions, dating back to 7/31/14 per Phantasytour. The song carries a funk-forward vibe courtesy of Eli Winderman‘s organ work, with a sound distinct from some of the band’s more hard-hitting tracks. Chuck Jones‘ bassline punches through the layered instruments as Rob Compa delivers syncopated guitar phrasings. The mathematically-minded group speaks in lyrics like binary code.

“The song could be about a character time traveling back to the Big Bang,” Winderman said. The refrain “Big things have small beginnings” is a reference to the Ridley Scott film Prometheus, though it was also a fitting prediction for Dopapod in the infancy of its career.

Along with the single, Dopapod shared the next chapter in its ongoing animated series. Entitled Building a Time Machine, the series began earlier this month with a video for the 2021 single, “Think“, the band’s first new release since 2019’s Emit Time. The animated series sees Dopapod working with Tandem Media, a production company known for its work with luxury car companies including Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, and more.

“It does feel like we made all these albums and made a time machine,” Compa said of the project. “And now we’re at the new frontier, wherever we’re going.”

Dopapod is gearing up for a four-night run across Colorado, set to begin on March 2nd at the Fox Theatre in Boulder. The band has a number of festival dates this summer, including stops at Summer CampAriseNorthlands, and more. Visit the band’s website for tickets and scroll down for a full list of tour dates.

For its shows, Dopapod has partnered with two charities, RAINN, the largest U.S. anti-sexual assault organization, and Camp Courageous, an organization that provides year-round recreational and respite care opportunities. A dollar of each Dopapod ticket sold will go to these charities, and fans will have the option to choose which of the two charities to donate to.

“At the end of the day, we hope we represent being yourself, being unique, and trying to do something new,” Winderman said. “If everyone does that, I think the world would be a much more interesting place all around.”

“Grow” Lyrics

Take a look
left and right
you gotta look twice

a microscopic particle
at the start
of its life.

it is temporarily fastened
in a state of despair
but there’s nowhere to go but

u-u-u-u-up
from here

little by little
it’s starting to settle like a
pile of bricks.

It’s poised steady balanced
and it’s trying to think
about how, why, and when
it came to exist

and the inexplainable
explanation
for existence

suddenly a voice soars
up in the air
ecstatically revealing like a
cold dead stare

that it all comes from
the moment it starts at
nothing

BIG THINGS
have
small beginnings

that’s why nothing always
turns to something
and why

BIG THINGS
have
small beginnings.
