[UPDATE, 1/31/24, 1 p.m. ET]: Dead & Company has issued an official post teasing an engagement at Sphere in Las Vegas, NV.

Shared on Tuesday afternoon, the video begins, “In 2023, Dead & Company played their final tour. But there are other ways to make sure the music never stops. And it’s gonna be a ball.”

A roaring crowd can then be heard chanting, “You know our love will not fade away,” just before Dead & Company strike up The Crickets‘ “Not Fade Away”. As they do, the $2.3 billion state-of-the-art Sphere comes alive with the moving tie-dye backgrounds and the Grateful Dead‘s iconic “Stealie” logo. The video does not offer any dates for an impending Sphere residency but rather ends with a simple “Forever” with the Dead’s 13-point lightning bolt striking through the O.

[1/31/24, 9 a.m. ET]: It appears Dead & Company are heading to the state-of-the-art Sphere in Las Vegas, NV: On Tuesday night, the venue’s massive exosphere screen lit up with a tie-dye background and the Grateful Dead‘s iconic “Stealie” logo. While the Grateful display didn’t come along with specific details—as it did when Phish used a similar trick to announce its upcoming April run at the venue—its appearance certainly adds credence to the rumors of a Dead & Company Sphere residency in the works that have circulated over the last month.

While details of the run have yet to be officially announced, The New York Post, which first reported in late 2023 about the Sphere rumors for Dead & Company—featuring Grateful Dead vets Bob Weir and Mickey Hart alongside John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti, and Jay Lane—wrote on Wednesday that the residency is due to be comprised of 14 shows and is expected to take place beginning in May 2024.

The fact that Dead & Company’s lengthy 2023 stadium swing was widely touted as the band’s “Final Tour” wouldn’t necessarily negate the possibility of a Sphere residency. Members of the band individually hinted at their thoughts on Dead & Company’s future throughout the summer trek.

Drummer Mickey Hart, for instance, said in a June 2023 interview, “Who knows what the next page is, we’re just turning the page. … It’s not final anything. We never said we’ll never play again, but we’ll never tour again.” Bassist Oteil Burbridge later commented when asked why the band was stopping, “Excellent question. And one that no one seems to have an answer for.”

John Mayer wrote in his post-tour reflections that “Dead & Company is still a band – we just don’t know what the next show will be.” He went on to say, “I speak for us all when I say that I look forward to being shown the next shaft of light… I know we will all move towards it together. This band changed my life, and I love you all for it. An incredible tour, an unforgettable ride, and a beautiful world of memories to visit. I’ll be seeing you…”

On New Year’s Eve 2023, Mayer hinted again at more Dead & Company action on the horizon during a guest appearance on CNN. As he responded to a question about upcoming plans with Dead & Company, “Well, I’m not at liberty to say just yet, but have hope is what I’ll say. Just like you should for all things in 2024.”

In the time since U2 began its ongoing inaugural residency at Sphere, various outlets have reported that the venue has experienced difficulty booking future engagements due to the high cost of producing shows that utilize its unique technical features, which include sprawling video screens that cover its interior and exterior. The Post noted in December that acts like Beyoncé and Coldplay are also in talks regarding Sphere residencies, while other reports have made similar assertions regarding the Eagles.

Sphere boss James Dolan seemed to corroborate that speculation in a September interview with The New York Times in which he stated that Sphere’s next two acts had already been booked. While he declined to comment on specifics, he noted that they were “big names.” Only one additional Sphere act, Phish, has been officially announced in the time since.
