On Tuesday, The Avett Brothers shared “Back Into The Light”, the third and final single from their forthcoming The Third Gleam album. The song joins previously-release singles “Victory” and “I Go To My Heart“.

On The Third Gleam, The Avett Brothers have scaled down operations and reverted to their original acoustic format. Featuring brothers Seth and Scott Avett, occasionally joined by bassist Bob Crawford, The Avett Brothers return to their roots in the third installment of the Gleam series, available on August 28th. The following day, August 29th, the (presumably) full band will perform at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Avett’s hometown of Concord, NC.

The music video for “Back Into The Light” follows the same basic format as the visual accompaniments for “Victory” and “I Go To My Heart”. Filmed in black and white, The Avett Brothers are once again confined to a small wood shed, adding to the renewed sense of acoustic roots music that brought them to prominence over a decade ago.

“Back Into The Light” hits on many familiar themes of The Avett Brothers including family, sadness, and the search for happiness. The initial announcement of The Third Gleam was met with widespread approval by longstanding fans of the group, whom many felt had taken a mainstream tilt in recent years since topping the charts with “Ain’t No Man” in 2015. “Back Into The Light”, however, is an instantly familiar Avett’s song about fathers and sons, stepping out of the darkness “Back Into The Light”, and just the simple harmony between the two brothers.

“Back Into The Light” Lyrics

All of these fathers with their bald spots

Pull to the car line dropping kids off

the sons and daughters of their parents wounds

Parents of their own

It’d make some sense if some were made to me

Sometimes I don’t see love in anything

And just when I surrender to my shadow

I snap out of it, and step into the light

I step back into the light

Sometimes my mind feels like a valley

So I take it to the bar

Fill it up like an ocean

To drown my troubles in

Just to find out what good swimmers they are

It’d make some sense if some were made to me

Sometimes I don’t see love in anything

And just when I surrender to my shadow

I snap out of it, and step into the light

I step back into the light

When my dreams feel like a rusty rail

That I slapped on a coat of paint

As the layer cracked and chipped and failed

This wretched lie is all that remains

It’d make some sense if some were made to me

Sometimes I don’t see love in anything

And just when I surrender to my shadow

I snap out of it, and step into the light

I step back into the light

I step into the light

I step back into the light
