In what is becoming something of a Mexico tradition, Phish’s Trey Anastasio joined in with Dave Matthews and DMB guitarist Tim Reynolds on Sunday to help round out the pair’s 2025 Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Riviera Maya event at Moon Palace Cancún.
Toward the end of their third and final night on the beach, Dave and Tim brought Trey to the stage to help lead a take on The Band classic “Ophelia” in honor of the late Garth Hudson, who passed away last week. Following some playful banter from Dave about how he got excited that Trey was there and f—ed up on the first tune, he led the trio into a rendition of DMB fan-favorite “Everyday” featuring a satisfying Matthews/Anastasio guitar face-off. Before making his exit, Trey joined Dave, Tim, and the entire crowd on the sand in a simple but moving sing-along on enduring Bob Marley & The Wailers optimism anthem “Three Little Birds”.
Trey Anastasio was the last in a string of sit-ins during the 2025 Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Riviera Maya event. On Saturday, Sierra Hull and members of her band got in on the action. The event also featured performances by Hull, Karina Rykman, Lord Huron, Hermanos Gutiérrez, Kristen Rae Bowden & Joe Lawlor, and more.

This marked the fourth time that Trey Anastasio joined in with Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds during their annual Mexican getaway, which often falls the week before Phish‘s own destination event at Moon Palace. Anastasio also sat in with Dave & Tim in Mexico in 2020, 2022, and 2024. In 2022, Dave Matthews returned the favor by sitting in with Phish at Moon Palace the following week. Then, Trey stuck around in Mexico to sit in with My Morning Jacket during the following weekend’s One Big Holiday festivities. Most recently, Trey Anastasio and Dave Matthews connected at Madison Square Garden in November 2024 as part of the SOULSHINE hurricane relief benefit.

He’s also due to take part in honoring the Grateful Dead at MusiCares’ Persons of the Year gala alongside Zac Brown, Stewart Copeland, Sierra Ferrell, Mick Fleetwood, Sammy Hagar, Bruce Hornsby, Norah Jones, Wynonna Judd, Noah Kahan, Dave Matthews, John Mayer (billed on his own in addition to Dead & Company), Maren Morris, My Morning Jacket, Lukas Nelson, Maggie Rose, Billy Strings, Vampire Weekend, The War and Treaty, The War On Drugs, and Dwight Yoakam.
Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon, and Page McConnell will now take over Moon Palace for their 2025 Phish: Riviera Maya event featuring shows on January 29th, 30th, 31st, and February 1st, 2025. LivePhish will offer pay-per-view livestreams of each show, with a discounted “I Saw It Again” package available if you order all four nights. This March, Trey Anastasio will keep his acoustic guitar at the ready for a lengthy solo acoustic tour, then link back up with Phish for an eight-show West Coast run in April.
