Umphrey’s McGee issued a new single on Friday, “I Don’t Know What I Want”. The track marks the group’s first full-band, non-instrumental studio release since 2020’s “Suxity“.

“I Don’t Know What I Want” arrives as a new product, still yet to make its live debut. Brendan Bayliss wrote the song and delivers angsty, 90’s alternative-rock lyrics. Instrumentally, the song carries more of a brooding 80’s decadence, rolling with the cadence of Brendan’s vocals and building to a mighty crescendo.

The single comes as UM’s first studio output since 2021’s You Walked Up Shaking In Your Boots But You Stood Tall And Left A Raging Bull. Just like the album of instrumental “walk-up music” from the band’s live repertoire, the new single sees Umphrey’s teaming up with longtime collaborator Greg Magers to produce the track. “I Don’t Know What I Want” was primarily recorded at guitarist Jake Cinninger‘s Boondock Studio in Niles, MI. The location served as the site of numerous Umphrey’s McGee livestreams throughout the pandemic.
