Daze Between New Orleans has announced the addition of celebrated music photographer Michael Weintrob‘s INSTRUMENTHEAD Immersive Art Experience to its 2024 event, set to take place at New Orleans, LA’s Faubourg Brewery during the “Daze Between” Jazz Fest weekends on Tuesday, April 30th and Wednesday, May 1st [get tickets].

INSTRUMENTHEAD, a passion project that Weintrob has been developing for more than twenty years, compiles portraits of notable musicians posing with their beloved instruments covering their faces. After building up an impressive cache of INSTRUMENTHEAD shots, Weintrob released his first INSTRUMENTHEAD coffee table book in 2017. In 2022, he released INSTRUMENTHEAD REVEALED, a page-by-page recreation of the original book featuring portraits of each artist with their faces finally unobscured.

As Weintrob explained of the INSTRUMENTHEAD project in a 2022 profile on CBS Sunday Morning, “I think that these instruments are an extension of who these musicians are. … One might say that they’re hiding behind them, or maybe they’re just showing their true self. … This is what they think about, that’s where there heads are really at. … They say that portrait photography is all about the eyes but you can look at these images and still feel the people.”

During Daze Between New Orleans, Weintrob will present the INSTRUMENTHEAD project to attendees with an Immersive Art Experience set up in the festival’s VIP Lounge. An assortment of works will also be on display elsewhere at the festival. Daze Between New Orleans is set to feature festival favorites including headliners Lettuce (with special guest John Scofield) and Gov’t Mule (with special guests John Scofield, Chuck Leavell, Ivan Neville, Karl Denson, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Daniel Donato) in addition to Krasno-Moore Project, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, Dogs in a Pile, Karina Rykman, and Cool Cool Cool. The music of the Big Easy will also be well-represented by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Galactic featuring Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph, The Iceman Special, and The Rumble ft. Chief Joseph Boudreaux.
