Selcouth Quartet, the nascent experimental quartet led by Joe Russo, has announced a late-night performance in New Orleans during Jazz Fest 2024. The show is set to take place at Toulouse Theatre on Friday, May 3rd (technically early-morning 5/4) after Russo finishes up his performance with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead at The Fillmore [get tickets].
Selcouth Quartet, formed in early 2023, is a dynamic ensemble featuring Russo (drums, keys) alongside longtime collaborators Stuart Bogie (saxophone, flute, clarinet, keys) Jon Shaw (upright and electric basses) and Jonathan Goldberger (acoustic and electric guitars). The band’s name—”selcouth” is a largely antiquated synonym for “strange” or “unusual”—serves as a mission statement of sorts for the experimental project. Those “selcouth” intentions are on full display on the group’s self-titled debut album, released late last year. Written via immersive improvisation and recorded at Floki Studios in Iceland with producer and engineer D. James Goodwin, the album presents a sprawling, instrumental journey through haunting melodies, propulsive improvisation, expansive atmospheres, and enveloping soundscapes.
