It’s a big announcement day for Stanton Moore: The mighty Galactic drummer has detailed three unique performances at New Orleans, LA’s Toulouse Theatre during Jazz Fest 2024 featuring a long list of exciting collaborators from the Crescent City and beyond.
On Saturday, April 27th (technically early-a.m. 4/28), Stanton Moore will anchor a special New Orleans edition of The Funk Sessions, Live For Live Music‘s long-running series of funk blowouts featuring rotating lineups of well-known players from around the country that originated in Denver, CO in early 2019. Stanton will be joined for the performance by Skerik, the enigmatic saxophonist known for his roles in Les Claypool projects like the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade; Nels Cline, the eclectic guitarist for Wilco; and Wil Blades, the revered organist out of San Francisco well-known to the Jazz Fest late-night crowd. This will mark the third time The Funk Sessions has made the trip from The Mile High City to the Big Easy. On Monday, April 29th, Moore will help Jazz Festers ease into the “Daze Between” with Frequinauts, a long-running staple on the Monday between Fair Grounds weekends. In addition to Stanton on drums, the funky all-star band features saxophonist and NOLA jazz ambassador Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr., Galactic bassist Rob Mercurio, globetrotting Roger Waters/Mike Gordon organist Robert Walter, and frequent Moore collaborator Will Bernard on guitar. After long hosting their annual Jazz Fest gig at d.b.a. for many years (and under various permutations of the band’s moniker), Frequinauts first moved the party to Toulouse Theatre in 2023. On Thursday, May 2nd (technically early-a.m. 5/3), Stanton Moore will gather a group of funky cohorts for a Stanton & Friends after-midnight bash to help get weekend two of Fest by Nite in gear. The Galactic drummer will be joined for the performance by Robert Walter (organ), Skerik (saxophone), Will Bernard (guitar), and local favorite Big Sam, the trombonist and bandleader of Big Sam’s Funky Nation. The Stanton & Friends show will also double as one of two official lineup announcement parties for Jam Cruise 21. In addition to his three varied shows at Toulouse Theatre, Stanton Moore can be found during the “Daze Between” at Daze Between New Orleans, the two-day festival at Faubourg Brewery performing alongside Eric Krasno with Krasno/Moore Project on Tuesday, April 30th and with Galactic on Wednesday, May 1st.
