Kitchen Dwellers, the “galaxy grass” outfit quickly climbing the ranks in the progressive bluegrass world, will pay tribute to late Big Easy music legend Dr. John at a special late-night performance at Toulouse Theatre. The show, set to take place on April 28th, 2024, will correspond with the first Sunday of New Orleans Jazz Fest. Tickets are on sale here.
Six-time Grammy winner Malcolm “Mac” John Rebennack Jr., a.k.a. Dr. John, is one of the most recognizable characters to ever emerge from the New Orleans music scene. Heavily influenced by the theatrics and aesthetic of his early mentor, Professor Longhair, Rebennack adopted a flamboyant style on stage that stuck with him for the entirety of his career. Following a stint in Los Angeles as a member of the famed studio band known as the “Wrecking Crew,” Rebennack returned to New Orleans where he took on the “Dr. John The Night Tripper” persona and launched a legendary solo career centered around the combination of New Orleans funk, psychedelic rock, and jazz. With their tribute show, Kitchen Dwellers aim to extrapolate the Night Tripper’s unique sound and style into the world of bluegrass.
Beyond their forthcoming tribute to Dr. John, presented by Live For Live Music and GMP Live, Kitchen Dwellers are busy adding new original music to their repertoire with the ongoing rollout of their latest studio LP, Seven Devils, a concept album inspired by Dante Alighieri‘s epic poem “The Divine Comedy” and the “seven deadly sins” outlined therein. The band recently shared a cinematic Western short film for their latest Seven Devils single, “The Crow and The Raven (III)”, which you can watch here.

Much like Dr. John, Kitchen Dwellers’ unique sound is a gumbo of various different musical styles. Although their instrumentation is rooted in the classic bluegrass tradition, their improvisational tangents often slip into heavier, rock-influenced space while their ever-expanding arsenal of covers pulls from a broad range of genres.
