The latest installment in the ongoing Grateful Dead archival video series, “All The Years Live“, is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This newest release showcases the band’s performance of “Loose Lucy” at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, NY on July 16th, 1990. This “Loose Lucy” video now marks the fourth selection from the July 16th show to be featured in “All The Years Live”, joining “Blow Away“, “Let It Grow“, and “High Time“.
This Jerry Garcia / Robert Hunter original, which first appeared on From The Mars Hotel in 1974, came midway through the first set between “Mexicali Blues” and “It’s All Over Now”. Garcia comes roaring in with the first line of “Loose Lucy, you’re alright,” and keeps that energy up through the crowd’s response of “thank you for a real good time.” While the song obviously isn’t the most exploratory vehicle for the band, it proved itself time and again to be a great way to get the crowd moving in the first set. Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux notes in the video’s description,
After a 16 year hiatus, Loose Lucy returned to the repertoire on 3/14/90 at the Capital Center in Landover, MD, and it was an incredibly well-received bust-out. It came back in its slower, 1973 arrangement, not the peppier 1974 arrangement as heard on Mars Hotel. There was nothing better than hearing tens of thousands of fans singing the chorus back to the band: thank you for a real good time!
