The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archive video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s sublime performance of “Uncle John’s Band” during the band’s farewell shows at Winterland in San Francisco on October 19th, 1974.
Thursday’s release makes the latest All The Years Live video which the band has shared from their October 1974 farewell shows as seen in The Grateful Dead Movie, following “Truckin'”, “Morning Dew”, “Weather Report Suite”, “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider”, “Sugaree”, and “U.S. Blues”.
“Uncle John’s Band” was the main focus on the debut episode of the Grateful Dead’s new podcast series, The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast. Each episode of the series explores recordings from the Dead’s studio discography track-by-track, with the first season focused on 1970’s Workingman’s Dead.
The band’s archivist David Lemieux mentioned with the video’s release,
Before Jerry decided to open ‘The Grateful Dead Movie’ with Gary Gutierrez‘s magnificent animated sequence, we had originally slotted this version of Uncle John’s Band to open the film. When we produced the DVD of the Movie in 2004, we felt it was appropriate to open the Bonus Songs feature with this version of ‘Uncle John’s Band’. This was produced from the original 16mm camera negative.
