The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archival video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “Playing In The Band” at Buckeye Lake in Thornville, OH on June 9th, 1991.
This video joins fellow 6/9/91 entry “Let It Grow” from the venue now known as Legend Valley. This rendition of an all-time Dead classic came in the three-slot of set two, following “Samson and Delilah” and “Crazy Fingers”. The old adage of “never miss a Sunday show” rings true in this short-but-sweet 9:23 minute rendition that finds the Dead, though slouching toward the end of their illustrious career, in fine form with no shortage of energy. While this late stage of the Dead’s career may not have yielded the finest improvisational exploration of their career, it did allow fortuitous technological advances as displayed by Jerry Garcia‘s extensive use of MIDI technology during the jam.
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux notes in the video’s description,
From the short-lived two keyboard version of the Grateful Dead featuring Vince and Bruce, Playing In The Band always allowed the band to do some deep exploration. Summer 1991 featured some of the best shows of the Dead’s final half-decade of touring, and Buckeye was no exception to this excellence.
