The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archival video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This twofer entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “China Cat Sunflower” into “I Know You Rider” at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA on October 2nd, 1987.
While Shoreline proved to be a fan-favorite venue for Deadheads and the band alike, playing there 39 times between 1987 and 1995, this is only the third All The Years Live entry to feature the iconic venue. This concert actually marked the Dead’s first appearance at the recently-constructed venue, which Bill Graham designed in 1986 to resemble the Dead’s “Steal Your Face” logo from above.
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux notes in the video’s description,
From the Grateful Dead’s very first show at Shoreline Amphitheatre, we have this typically hot, energetic China Cat Sunflower / I Know You Rider feature the quintessential 1987 Grateful Dead sound. They’d been scheduled to play Shoreline in the late Summer of 1986, but Jerry’s diabetic coma meant they had to delay their first performance there a year.
