The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archival video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This double-dose entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “Sugar Magnolia” into “Scarlet Begonias” at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, NY on July 16th, 1990.
This video joins fellow 7/16/1990 entries “Ship of Fools“, “High Time“, “Let It Grow“, “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo” and Brent Mydland‘s final “Blow Away“.
Opening up the second set of the show was the Bob Weir / John Perry Barlow feel-good groove “Sugar Magnolia”. Smiles are all around as the band blasts through this fan favorite, setting up what proved to be a memorable second set. While not flowing into its usual partner “Sunshine Daydream”, the transition here to “Scarlet Begonias” is smooth and sets up a wave of momentum the band would ride through the rest of the show.
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux notes in the video’s description,
A rare second set opening Sugar Magnolia was followed by what felt like its natural partner whenever it was played outside of its usual set-closing position, Scarlet Begonias. From just 10 days before Brent’s passing, this Buffalo show was another strong stop on the summer tour of 1990.
