The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archive video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “Truckin'” at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, NY on June 13th, 1993.
This video joins fellow 6/13/93 releases “Cassidy” and “Way To Go Home“. This Sunday concert, the band’s only New York show that summer, came in the middle of the Dead’s 15 show East Coast tour.
While 1993 may not be most peoples’ favorite year of the Grateful Dead, at least after attendance biases are set aside, this rendition of the American Beauty classic still has its charms. From Bob Weir‘s early flubbed lyrics to Jerry Garcia trying to hold back a smile when Weir belts “Truckin’ up to Buffalo”, this performance takes on a loose, almost carefree nature as even the band itself must marvel at “what a long strange trip it’s been.”
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux notes in the video’s description,
Although it’s not quite the thrill of hearing the fellows in Spinal Tap give a shout out to Cleveland, seeing the Grateful Dead play Truckin’ up in Buffalo was always very fun, and very rare, happening only four times (twice in 1973, and in 1990 and 1993). This is from the last Grateful Dead show I saw.
