The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archive video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of the calypso classic “Man Smart, Woman Smarter” from July 4th, 1989 at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, NY.
Released in 2005 as Truckin’ Up To Buffalo, the entire Independence Day concert finds the Dead in peak form riding the crest of a late career high. Coming in following the second set opener of “Touch Of Grey”, spirits are sky high as Bill Kreutzmann and Micky Hart feel the rhythm as Bob Weir and Brent Mydland feel the rhyme.
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux notes in the video’s description,
This calypso cover first appeared in the Dead’s setlists in 1981, and settled into a second-set pre-Drums slot, played occasionally and always getting the crowd dancing. Sometimes, when they were in the mood, Brent would take a verse, always welcome.
Watch the Grateful Dead perform “Man Smart, Woman Smarter” at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, NY on 7/4/89.
