The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archival video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “Scarlet Begonias” from San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on October 19th, 1974.
This clip joins fellow 10/19/74 entry “Uncle John’s Band“, as well as a host of other selections from the Dead’s five-night run at Winterland that became The Grateful Dead Movie. This “Scarlet Begonias”, from the penultimate night of the run, is brimming with energy as the band prepares to bid farewell to its fans for a much-deserved break from touring.
While this live cut comes from the shows that would become The Grateful Dead Movie, it was not actually included in the theatrical edition. Instead, it found its way into the trove of bonus tracks for the DVD release. Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux explains in the video’s caption,
When we were working on selecting the Bonus Material for the Grateful Dead Movie DVD, we looked at Jerry’s long list of songs that he considered including in the original movie, and this Scarlet Begonias was one of them. It features some wonderful vocal improvisation by Donna Jean during the instrumental section at the end of the song.
