The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archive video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “Space” > “Fire On The Mountain” from Radio City Music Hall on October 31st, 1980.
From the opening crash of Mickey Hart‘s cymbal and into the Phil Zone, this live cut drops viewers into the thick of it with “Space”. Taken from the Dead’s Halloween concert, the sonic exploration gets extra spooky before the calming embrace of “Fire On The Mountain”. The band moves with purpose through the reggae-infused romper, with Jerry Garcia leading the way with his envelope filter-assisted leads.
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux notes in the video’s description,
A very rare Fire On The Mountain that was not preceded by Scarlet Begonias, this fine rendition, a standout performance from both Dead Set and Dead Ahead, this one comes out of Space incredibl[y] smoothly, and is one of the cooler transitions you’ll hear out [of] Space.
