The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “Looks Like Rain” at the Giza Sound And Light Theatre underneath the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt on September 16th, 1978.
Though the footage is not the highest resolution, it offers a rare glimpse at a dynamic performance and iconic moment in Grateful Dead history. Jerry Garcia turns in an especially energetic performance in the clip, highlighted by a spirited guitar solo. Donna Jean Godchaux also highlights the performance, accompanying Bob Weir on vocals.
Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux offered commentary in the video description: “Joining the Grateful Dead’s repertoire in 1972, Looks Like Rain was a standout track from Bob’s 1972 solo record Ace. This performance is one of the many highlights from the Dead’s Egypt shows in 1978, and highlights Donna’s magnificent contributions to the Grateful Dead’s sound.”
The Grateful Dead performed three concerts at Giza Sound And Light Theatre in the shadow of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Cairo, Egypt on September 14th–16th, 1978. A video of the Grateful Dead performing “Ollin Arageed” into “Fire On The Mountain” in Egypt was previously featured in the All The Years Live video series.
